Horseback Trail Ride – 9 Days

We start our trip in Osorno where we drive to the border of Lake Rupanco, one of the lakes bordering the National Park of Puyehue.

Our 9 day Horseback Trail Ride is an unforgettable journey through the dense temperate rain forest of Chile. During our trip, we stay with local families, including a native Mapuche family. We make our way through bamboos, ferns and many evergreen flowering plants

We start our trip in Osorno where we drive to the border of Lake Rupanco, one of the lakes bordering the National Park of Puyehue. There we are be transferred by boat to our base camp cottage: the start of an unforgettable journey through the dense temperate rain forest of Chile.

Due to its relative isolation, this area of Chile has a high degree of endemic flora and counts with 30 different mammal species & 80 bird species. Blue lakes, lagoons, waterfalls, swamps, wild streaming rivers are the keywords of our adventure into the Chilean rainforest. Not to forget the snow-covered volcanoes, thermal springs and the Andes themselves! Getting enthused? Read further!

Day 1: Transfer from Osorno airport to the small port of Lake Rupanco. There we will catch a boat the other side. We will be picked up by Luis with his tractor. We will load our bags and ourselves onto a cart and he bring us to our cottage. This cottage will be our base camp where we can leave our belongings and pack only for the day trips and nights elsewhere. Dinner & night at base camp Cottage.

Day 2: Exiting moment: after breakfast we get to meet our four-footed companion for our journey. Full day riding in National Park Vicente Pérez Rosales towards the Callao Valley. Lunch at Lake Los Quetros. Hours of riding: approx. 5 hours Dinner & night at Cottage R.

Day 3: Full day riding towards Lake Todos Los Santos where we have lunch at a secluded beach at the edge of the water. You can experience swimming with your horse or plunge into the water yourself. After lunch, we return to our Cottage where a nice and tempting hot tub awaits us with some nice snacks.
Hours of riding: approx. 5 hours Dinner & night at Cottage R.

Day 4: After breakfast we head towards the natural hot spring waters of Callao for a thermal bath. We enjoy a nice break there and after lunch we ride back through the National Park towards our base camp cottage.

Day 5: This is our resting day. You can chose between reading a book, going for an explorative walk or to go fly fishing for the day! In the afternoon we will all help to prepare the fire for our “Cordero al Palo”. This is traditional Patagonian Lamb roasted on the spit for 6 hours.

Day 6: Today we head towards the other direction: we go and explore the Puyehue National park. We will plough our way through bamboo forests and cross the broad Rio Blanco River: crystal clear water with beautifully rounded colored stones on the bottom. Our local guide will be sure to clear our way with his machete. We ride up towards the Antillanca volcano and witness the landscape to change. When we arrive at the abandoned ski resort of Antillanca prepare yourself for a déjà-vu of the Shining….:)

Dinner & night at Shelter.

Day 7: We take an alternative path down and plough through the deep lava sand along the flanks of the Casa Blanca Volcano to reach La Plaza. There appears a mystic sight of brunt trees by lava streams. If we are lucky we can admire the sigh of three magnificent volcanoes: Casablanca, Osorno & Puntiagudo. After crossing thick forests and diverse terrain you will appreciate your sturdy Criollo horses even more!

Dinner & night at base camp Cottage.

Day 8: This is our last day of riding. Along the shores of the Lake Rupanco we can admire the abundant vegetation & waterfalls till we reach a secluded beach with a volcanic shore. Here you can dig your own pool till it fills up with the boiling hot waters that emerge from the soil. You may want to dig a canal to the lake so cold water can enter. We gather some fire wood in order to cook our food before we make our way back.

Day 9: All good things come to an end… unfortunately and so does our trip! After breakfast Luis brings us to the shore of the Lake with his tractor where we catch the boat and head to Osorno.
