Every May 24th, Chileans across the country celebrate Día del Completo — a day dedicated to one of the most beloved and iconic street foods in Chilean culture: the completo. But what exactly is a completo? And how did a humble hot dog become such a staple of Chilean life?

What Is a Completo?

At first glance, a completo might look like your average hot dog. But bite into one, and you’ll quickly discover it’s so much more. A classic completo is served in a soft bun and topped with sauerkraut (chucrut), diced tomatoes, and lots of mayonnaise (you can make it italian by adding avocado (palta)). It’s rich, messy, and utterly satisfying.

There are several variations — from the completo italiano (named for its red, white, and green colors that match the Italian flag) to more regional takes — but at its core, it’s all about piling on the toppings and enjoying it without shame.

A Brief History of the Completo

The story of the completo begins in the early 20th century, when American-style hot dogs made their way to Chile. However, the simple ketchup-and-mustard version didn’t quite suit the Chilean palate. Over time, local vendors adapted it by adding ingredients that reflected Chilean tastes — resulting in a uniquely Chilean creation.

By the 1980s and 1990s, the completo had become a national obsession, found everywhere from street carts and corner stores to diners and fast-food chains, including parties, fundraising events, and “onces” (our version of tea time). Today, it’s not just food — it’s a cultural icon.

Why the Completo Matters

The completo isn’t just a snack — it’s part of the everyday life of Chileans. It’s the quick bite after work, the go-to lunch during a busy day, the comfort food after a long night out. For many, it’s tied to memories of childhood, friendships, and family outings.

It also represents Chile’s ability to take something foreign and make it entirely its own — adding flavor, personality, and pride.

Celebrating Día del Completo

Every year on May 24th, Chile celebrates Día del Completo with special deals, social media tributes, and long lines at local fuentes de soda and carros de completos. It’s a day to indulge — guilt-free — and appreciate this messy, mayo-drenched marvel that unites people across generations and social classes.

So whether you’re in Santiago, Valparaíso, or anywhere in the world — if you’ve ever had a completo, you know it’s more than just a hot dog. It’s a celebration of Chilean flavor, creativity, and joy.

¡Feliz Día del Completo! Go get yours — extra mayo, of course.
