A lot of people ask us when is the best time to visit Chile. The truth is, being such a varied country with almost every climate on the planet, you can come any season and have a fantastic experience.
That said, certain months stand out—and September is one of the best. Here’s why:
The Weather
In most of Chile, September is goldilocks perfection: not too hot, not too cold. The weather can be slightly unpredictable, but it’s never extreme or uncomfortable.
If you love heat or cold, you’ll find balance here—without having to deal with either extreme.
Just note: Patagonia isn’t quite ready in September. Parks may still be closed, and some areas still get snow. For Patagonia, we recommend visiting later in the season
Budget-Friendly Travel
September still counts as low season for most hotels and tours, so you’ll find great savings while still enjoying incredible experiences.
Prices do rise around the national holidays, but overall, you’ll get much better value than during summer.
Take advantage of lower rates and enjoy more of Chile with our Winery Tours, Andes Hikes or Horseback Riding.
The Stars
In early spring, the galactic centre of the Milky Way still rises over the horizon early in the evening. That means you can easily see it during most astrotourism tours.
Don’t miss the chance—our Stargazing Tour is the perfect way to experience Chile’s famous night skies.

The Party: Fiestas Patrias
Chile’s Independence festivities take place around September 18–19, but the fun usually lasts a whole week.
Schools are out, sometimes extra holidays are added, and the entire country shifts into celebration mode. Streets and parks fill with the smell of barbecue, music, and laughter.
This is a holiday with no stress, no gifts, and no obligations—just hanging out with family and friends, enjoying Terremotos (a delicious but dangerous drink made from sweet young wine, pineapple ice cream, and grenadine or Fernet), and eating your weight in meat in the balmy spring weather.
While many celebrations happen at home, there are also public Fondas in large parks and city spaces. Here you’ll find:
- Music and dancing
- Games for kids
- Food stalls with empanadas, choripanes, anticuchos, churros, cotton candy, and more
It’s one of the best times to feel Chile’s festive spirit.
The Flowers
In years with more rain than usual, late September marks the beginning of the flowering desert phenomenon (Desierto Florido), which continues through early November.
Vast stretches of the Atacama Desert transform into colourful flower fields, with many species that are unique to the region.
A quick reminder: Please book official tours if you plan to see this natural wonder. While you can spot flowers from the highway, stepping off marked trails and trampling the plants causes real damage to this fragile ecosystem. Sustainable, respectful tourism helps protect it for the future.
